Mobile plant fire suppression, and machinery fire protection systems
Mobile plant and machinery operate in a variety of different environments, many of which pose specific and harsh challenges, and which may be equipped with a varying degree of fixed firefighting systems.
To prevent losses and downtime, mobile plant & machinery fire protection can be installed to the vehicles themselves, to prevent fires from starting and to tackle any flames that are able to ignite.
Ultimately the aim is to provide an early response to fire risks such as rising temperatures and sources of ignition so that fires cannot begin at all and downtime/losses are completely eliminated.
Merlin’s expert engineers can recommend the correct mobile plant & machinery fire protection for each application, and we offer end-to-end supply, installation, and maintenance services to keep your vehicles protected at all times.
About Mobile Plant Fire Suppression
Merlin are the exclusive UK & Ireland suppliers of the Dafo Vehicle Fire Suppression System, which can be installed in mobile plant, as well as other vehicles including EVs, ICEs, buses and coaches.
The system monitors the engine compartment and other high-risk areas to identify any emerging fire risks, such as overheating batteries.
By responding immediately to a developing threat, the system puts out the threat of fire, before the fire itself can start. In vehicles where flames can take hold very quickly, this rapid response is absolutely essential to reduce risk.
Dafo Vehicle Fire Suppression Systems use a proprietary suppression agent called Forrex, which cuts off the supply of oxygen to the fire and prevents it from reigniting during the cooldown process.

Why is Mobile Plant & Machinery at Risk?
Mobile plant and machinery fire protection can mitigate a wide range of different risks arising from the equipment itself, the operating environment and the ways in which it is used.
This can include, for example:
- Long operating hours with little to no cooldown time
- Presence of combustible dust, vapour and flammable materials
- Engine oils and lubricants that may be more susceptible to ignition
- Protection against sparks, embers and naked flames
- Active monitoring to detect engine hotspots and prevent flashpoints
The scale of heavy plant means losses can be significant, both because of the value of the equipment itself, and the hazard it can pose to surrounding areas in the event of a fire.
Mobile plant fire protection mitigates all of these risks at once, protecting personnel including the operator of the equipment, reducing the risk of fire spreading and helping to ensure business continuity even in the event of an emergency.
Upon activation, the alarm will trigger, alerting operators and anyone nearby of the budding fire to allow them to quickly get to safety. Alongside this, the suppression system activates, coating the engine in our Forrex agent, eliminating the fire and ensuring you don’t need to worry about reignition.
The video below shows how the system works in a vehicle in detail alongside providing an insight into our installation process.

Three Stages to Prevent Mobile Plant Fires
The Dafo system works in three stages:
- A linear heat detection cable monitors high-risk areas for excess heat and signs of fire, triggering the suppression agent if an alarm condition is detected.
- An alarm alerts operators and nearby personnel to evacuate, with no need for manual firefighting.
- The specialist Forrex agent is dispensed into the vehicle to subdue the fire and prevent reignition if heat levels remain high.
Based on decades of research and development, this rigorously tested solution has proven itself time and time again in the real world, with more than 100,000 vehicle installations worldwide.
