Our deluge systems provide fast-acting fire suppression across a range of high-risk areas.

Deluge systems are a rapid way to suppress fires in a variety of different high-risk environments, and are especially suited to industrial settings where water damage is a secondary concern, compared with the urgency of extinguishing the fire.

Merlin supply a range of different deluge suppression systems and can recommend a suitable solution based on the specific needs of your environment and application.

This includes full-flood deluge systems for small enclosed areas, as well as large-capacity installations to protect wide open spaces.

Deluge suppression can be used in many different circumstances, including large buildings like air hangars and chemical processing plants, and in the presence of highly flammable materials like waste and recyclables.

Merlin’s engineers work on all sizes of installation to ensure our clients get the level of fire suppression they need.

We can advise on bespoke installations, including very large deluge systems that require custom-built solutions to operate at scale.

Beyond the design and installation stage, we continue to provide aftercare and can offer training on how to use deluge systems, so that your personnel know exactly what to do in the event of a fire.

How Deluge Systems Work

A deluge system consists of an open distribution pipe network which is controlled usually by several valves, which can release a fire suppression agent in specific areas or everywhere at once.

The suppression agent in many cases is water, which can be released as a fine mist for broad area coverage, although other agents may also be used in certain circumstances.

Discharge can be triggered automatically using a number of appropriate methods to detect the outbreak of fire and quickly dispense the suppression agent via all open heads in the network.

This provides immediate control and can help to contain fires, as well as extinguish smaller blazes before they can spread and take hold of your premises and equipment.

In some cases, you might want to install a deluge suppression system that is limited to a particular high-risk area or high-value piece of equipment, to provide targeted protection without releasing the suppression agent where it is not needed.

Either way, we can help you to decide exactly what you need and can design and install the appropriate deluge system to solve your fire hazard risks.

Should I Use a Deluge System?

Deluge systems are commonly used in industries where combustible materials are handled, including recycling, waste-to-energy and renewable power.

They come in a range of different types:

  • Area Protection Systems are most commonly used in high hazard areas and large industrial spaces.
  • Equipment Protection Systems are targeted to specific equipment or machinery for fire suppression within a small area.
  • Structural Protection Systems offer coverage in structurally significant areas to protect against fire and heat damage.
  • Water Curtains act as a physical barrier to prevent the spread of heat and smoke during a fire, to support safe evacuation.
